How to Choose a Dog Bed When Floor Space Is Limited

Choose a bed by the space your dog needs to stretch out, then check where its full footprint can go. Among the two FurHaven chaise sizes below, the medium is worth considering when its sleeping surface comfortably accommodates your dog. Move to the large when the medium leaves too little room and the larger footprint works in your home.

If both sizes fit your dog, the medium takes up less floor space. If neither fits, keep looking for a bed with a larger published sleeping surface. A small room may call for moving a side table or changing the bed’s location.

1. Measure the space your dog actually sleeps in

Watch a few relaxed resting positions, including lying on their side and stretching their legs. A dog that often curls up still needs room to uncurl. The RSPCA’s dog-bed guidance recommends enough space for these natural positions.

  1. Record the full lying length. Include the head and any paws extending beyond the body. Nose-to-tail-base length alone can miss space the dog uses while stretched out.
  2. Record the width. Look at how far the legs extend as well as the width of the torso. Use the largest comfortable position you observe, rather than measuring only a tight curl.
  3. Use a suitable existing bed as a reference. Measure its flat area and notice whether your dog can turn and change position freely. An undersized current bed is not a useful target.
  4. Keep the dog’s measurements beside the product dimensions. Check both length and width. A longer bed may still be too narrow for the way your dog rests.

Let your dog rest undisturbed; you can measure the area after they move. Leave room for comfortable movement instead of treating an exact edge-to-edge match as enough. Size labels and weight recommendations help narrow the search, but neither replaces this fit check.

2. Compare sleeping space and floor space separately

The flat sleeping surface is the space inside the raised bolsters. The full footprint includes those edges and tells you how much floor the bed occupies. Both matter, but they answer different questions.

The Amazon listings for these Stone Gray chaise beds include a size chart with sleeping-surface measurements. The figures below are published dimensions, not CozyWa measurements.

FurHaven medium and large chaise beds: length × width in inches
Stone Gray size Sleeping surface Full floor footprint
Medium 26.5 × 16.5 30 × 20
Large 32 × 23 36 × 27

Moving up to the large adds 5.5 inches of sleeping length and 6.5 inches of sleeping width. On the floor, it requires an extra 6 inches in length and 7 inches in width. Measure that larger rectangle before deciding where it will go.

Hypothetical example: A dog that occupies 28 × 18 inches while stretched out already exceeds the medium’s published sleeping surface in both directions. The large remains a candidate, subject to room for comfortable movement and the listing’s weight recommendation. Turning the medium sideways or squeezing it beside the sofa does not create more sleeping space.

Medium: when the smaller sleeping surface is enough

Consider the FurHaven medium L-shaped chaise bed in Stone Gray if your dog fits comfortably within the medium dimensions above. Its two bolstered sides leave open edges for access, which can be useful beside a sofa or wall. Amazon recommends this size for dogs up to 35 pounds; being below that weight alone does not establish fit.

If the medium accommodates your dog’s resting positions, its smaller footprint leaves more of the room available for people and furniture.

Medium-dog sleeping zone

FurHaven medium L-shaped chaise dog bed, Stone Gray

A Medium L-shaped chaise bed to compare against both your dog’s sleeping space and the room’s available floor area.

Good fit for: A sleeping setup where the selected Medium’s 30 × 20-inch footprint and listed 26.5 × 16.5-inch sleeping area fit your measurements.

Consider before buying: Measure your dog’s natural sleeping position, including legs, and recheck the selected size chart. Listed height and foam details vary; do not infer entry height. A removable washable cover does not mean the insert or whole bed is washable.

Large: when the medium leaves too little room

The FurHaven large L-shaped chaise bed in Stone Gray keeps the same general layout while providing more flat sleeping space. Consider it when the medium is too short or narrow and the large gives your dog room to settle and change position. The listing recommends the large for dogs up to 55 pounds.

Its 36 × 27-inch footprint may require moving a small table or using another wall. Check that arrangement before ordering.

Large-dog sleeping zone

FurHaven large L-shaped chaise dog bed, Stone Gray

A Large L-shaped chaise bed offering more listed sleeping space than the Medium, with a larger floor footprint to plan for.

Good fit for: A sleeping setup where the selected Large’s 36 × 27-inch footprint and listed 32 × 23-inch sleeping area fit both dog and room.

Consider before buying: Recheck the selected Large size chart and leave walking space around the full bed. Listed height and foam details vary; do not infer entry height. Follow the exact cover-care label; do not treat the insert or whole bed as washable.

4. Check the whole footprint in the room

Once a size meets your dog’s needs, record its outside length and width beside your room measurements. A 30-inch opening between furniture is not automatically suitable for a 30-inch bed: sofa feet, cabinet doors, and the route people take may use some of that space.

Lay out the footprint with a measuring tape or, on a suitable surface, removable painter’s tape tested in an inconspicuous spot. Keep your dog away while measuring and remove loose tape afterward. Check both orientations, allowing access to the bed’s open edges.

Open nearby doors and drawers, then walk past as you normally would. Include any mobility aid or bulky item you regularly carry. Leave space for your dog to approach and get up, and preserve access to exits, vents, and the water bowl. There is no single passing-space measurement that answers every room layout.

5. Check whether the bolsters and care suit your routine

These are both bolstered chaise beds. Moving from medium to large changes the available space, but it does not remove the raised sides. If your dog consistently chooses an open, flat resting surface, consider that preference before buying either model.

Both Amazon listings describe a removable, washable cover. Follow the supplied care label for the cover and the separate instructions for the insert; a washable cover does not make the whole bed machine-washable. Also check that you can reach the zipper and lift the bed for cleaning in the spot you have chosen.

FurHaven’s FAQ states that its beds are not chew-resistant. If your dog chews bedding, these recommendations do not solve that problem. Neither bed is a way to contain a dog in one part of the room.

6. Keep the current bed or buy for a measured need

Keep an existing bed that gives your dog enough sleeping room, remains in good condition, and can be cleaned appropriately. Trying a different position may solve the floor-space problem without another purchase.

If you need a replacement, return to the size comparison with your notes. Choose the medium when it comfortably fits; consider the large when the medium does not and the room can accommodate it. If the large is still too small, look for more usable sleeping space rather than choosing from these two by default.

Extra-large sleeping zone

EHEYCIGA extra-large 44-inch dog bed

An extra-large bed candidate with a listed 44 × 32-inch outer footprint; usable sleeping-space evidence is still needed before a size-based recommendation.

Good fit for: Only a setup where both the dog's sleeping extent and the bed's usable interior have been matched. Outer length alone cannot establish that fit.

Consider before buying: Confirm usable sleeping length and width before choosing it as an upgrade. Check the exact cover-care label; the foam is not machine washable, and the cited waterproof-film claim does not extend to the sides.
